After 16 years of junior and college tennis...
Leaving the competitive world after having done it for so many years was, initially, a difficult transition. The disappointment of not "making it" on the pro circuit lingered for the first few years of teaching. This, however, gave way to a realization that I could re-direct my knowledge and experience to helping students and clubs.
I began to embrace the teaching life and saw how many new doors it opened to me. My life experience in tennis allowed me to organize corporate events, run tournaments, coordinate activities at clubs and camps, and essentially write my own script for which direction I wanted to head.
To say that tennis has allowed me to lead an incredibly fun, diverse life is an understatement--I have met thousands of people and had the pleasure of working under conditions where people are at their best. Outdoors, moving their bodies, learning, and, well, PLAYING!
Over 35 years of teaching, coaching, playing, pro-shop management, and program directing have all helped me arrive at the place I am at today — teaching private lessons and becoming the head pro at Sherwood Country Club, one of the most spectacular clubs in the country.
Working in a club setting allows for so many opportunities to bring my life in tennis to its maximum potential. Being able to teach so many players, of course, but also to be able to run events, coach teams in USTA league play, and essentially have access to, not only multiple courts, but access to grass, red clay, and brand-new pickleball courts for whatever themed event we are running.
It is also a great feeling to be a part of a team of high-level pros who are able to play a huge part in all these events, which brings the level of execution up substantially. The ability to organize more logistically challenging programs becomes so much easier with a team of like-minded, hard-working pros like we have at Sherwood.
And so my life in tennis continues…
